In a community of exiled Tibetans in Dharamsala, India, Karma, a Tibetan-American
is filming a documentary about former political prisoners. Among the
interviewees is recent arrival, Dhongdup, an ex-priest who was imprisoned
for his anti-Chinese activism. Dhongdup reveals that he is not a refugee,
but a man on a mission to fulfill his mother's dying wish- to deliver
a gahu (charm box) to a man named Loga. Karma is inexplicably
drawn into the search for Loga and to the enigmatic Dhongdup. With him,
she discovers the legacy of Tibet's resistance fighters and the sacrifices
they made to the political struggle that continues today.
DREAMING LHASA, the first dramatic feature by documentary filmmakers Ritu Sarin and Tenzing Sonam touches upon themes of identity and homeland among a community of refugees made up of a younger generation who have never seen their homeland and an older generation whose memories of a free Tibet are their only living link to the past.
