WATER, the third installment in Deepa Mehta's elemental trilogy (FIRE, EARTH) faced violent protests by Hindu fundamentalists in India which forced the production to shut down and remount years later in Sri Lanka .

Set in 1930s Colonial India, when the practice of child marriage was still prevalent, young girls were often married to older men to ensure their family's economic survival. Eight-year-old Chuyia, a child with little recollection of her husband or comprehension of her marriage is widowed. In accordance with Hindu laws, she is sent to a home where widows live in renunciation apart from society. Chuyia's rambunctious presence has a rousing affect on the residents, particularly the devout Shakuntula and Kalyani, a young widow forced into prostitution for the home's financial preservation.

Young Sri Lankan talent, Sarala, in her first film appearance, brings a raw, natural energy to the film. And with a stellar cast that includes Seema Biswas (BANDIT QUEEN), Lisa Ray (BOLLYWOOD/HOLLYWOOD) and John Abraham (DHOOM, VIRUDDH), Deepa Mehta weaves an inherently powerful tale that makes everyone who witnesses it grateful for her tenacity in seeing it through to fruition.
