What begins as an undergraduate research project at Stanford University in 2001 leads a student on a journey across the United States and eventually to Punjab, India to capture the stories of Sikhs targeted for violence in the immediate aftermath of 9/11.

After the attacks of September 11th, Americans rallied together as a nation united to combat terrorism. Yet, in an atmosphere of heightened fear and anxiety, identifying a common enemy proved to be not so easy. Anyone who “looked” Arab became a potential target for animosity and violence, including many Sikhs who wore turbans. After the murder of a Sikh man in Arizona, Valarie Kaur armed herself with a camera and set out to examine who counts as “American” in times of crisis. Along the way she unearthed many questions about national identity, hate violence and collective grief.
