Beena, an orphan from a small town, comes to Bombay with new her husband only to learn that he never wanted to marry her. As his family’s sole breadwinner, he grows overwhelmed by their constant demands and eventually flees. He is presumed dead and Beena takes up the responsibility of supporting her in-laws. At work she meets and falls in love with a colleague who wishes to marry her. Her in-laws oppose the match fearing that the marriage will lose them their source of support. They reluctantly accept the relationship on the condition that Beena and her new husband live with the family and continue to support them. But before the shining promise of a happy medium can be realized, Beena’s wayward husband returns and her in-laws demeanor turn drastically against her.
MAIN ZINDA HOON won the National Award for Best Film on Social Issues as a powerful commentary on the plight of women in India. Writer/director Sudhir Misra created an ideal platform for tribute honoree Deepti Naval to exhibit her scope as a performer and she delivers with a strikingly sensitive portrayal of a woman confronting adversity with courage and hope as her arsenal.
