Kamla, a tribal slave girl, is brought to Delhi by Jai Singh, a newspaper
reporter looking to prove the existence of the flesh trade in modern
India. In the city, she is cared for by Sarita, Jai Singh's wife. As
the women form a strong bond, Kamla helps Sarita realize that she
herself is a victim of domestic slavery. Kamla's story creates ripples in the capital, embarrassing many, as Jai Singh falls victim to his own manipulative methods. Long underestimated as an actress, dedicated performances such as this one forced many critics and laypersons alike to sit up and take full notice of Deepti Naval’s wealth of talent. As the timid Kamla, she lends the film an air of credibility that can be directly attributed to her commitment and sheer depth of talent.
Directed by Jag Mundhra and based on a play by legendary Indian
playwright Vijay Tendulkar, KAMLA is featured as part of IFFLA's Tribute
to Deepti Naval.
