After tackling William Shakespeare’s classic Macbeth in 2003 with the riveting MAQBOOL, noted filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj returns to the bard’s literary treasure trove, this time turning his attention to Othello. Set against the milieu of political maneuvering in Uttar Pradesh, OMKARA follows one man’s descent into blinding jealousy so volatile that it threatens to destroy everyone in its wake.
Omkara is the dynamic head of a gang of outlaws under the commission of a rising politician. A successful campaign makes way for Omkara to promote among his cohorts. When he selects Kesu as his chief lieutenant, he awakens rage and envy in Langda Tyagi. Ally turns arch enemy as Langda plots to destroy both men by implicating Kesu in an affair with Omkara’s beloved Dolly. Langda methodically poisons Omkara’s mind with lies and insinuations until he is consumed by a sickness called jealousy, which reaps epidemic casualties.
As writer, director and composer, Vishal Bhardwaj stays true to the spirit of the classic play, yet infuses it with a high wire tension and distinctly Indian flare that marks it as a one-of-a-kind adaptation.
