Unable to bear the brutality of her alcoholic husband, Kiranjit Ahluwalia, a battered Punjabi wife and mother of two sets him on fire. Charging Kiranjit with murder in the first degree, the British court sentences her to life imprisonment. While in prison, she befriends her cell mate, a wealthy woman who teaches her to speak English, and leaks her story beyond the prison walls. Kiranjit's case garners the attention of a motley group of South Asian social workers led by Radha Dalal. Radha fights to expose Kiranjit's plight to the media, leading to a landmark case that redefined the word "provocation" in British laws dealing with battered women.
Based on a true story, PROVOKED is directed by Los Angeles based filmmaker Jag Mundhra. This intense film brings together a vibrant pool of talent that includes actors Aishwarya Rai, Naveen Andrews, Nandita Das and Miranda Richardson and a touching score by A.R. Rahman.
