As if dating was not hard enough for anyone, finding a beau who can also understand her complex diasporic identity is a futile endeavor for Leela, a hipster artist in New York City with a knack for the macabre. Having exhausted all conventional dating methods and desperate for companionship, she finally sees the only foolproof way to coupledom: stitch together the perfect boyfriend herself.
Deliciously dark and shamelessly funny, this seductive horror tale is also surprising in its emotional prowess. Speaking to the core loneliness and incongruity of the immigrant experience while offering a refreshingly honest take on the oftentimes grueling quest for love, the film, directed with incisiveness and wit by Lorena Lourenço, also introduces us to an audacious comedic force, Pratima Mani, who also pens the script.
Lorena Lourenco
Lorena Lourenço is an award-winning director, writer, and producer from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and a USC School of Cinematic Arts alumna. She is passionate about telling stories from marginalized perspectives that highlight cultural identity, the immigrant experience, and female strength (though she barely works out). Her short Muy Gay Too Mexicano has been selected for competition at Outfest, Inside Out Film and Video Festival, Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival, Out on Film, Official Latino Film Festival, and Los Angeles Diversity Film Festival, and is streaming on Max. Her pilot Sula and I was selected for the Orchard Project’s Episodic Lab and is being produced by Mucho Más Media. The web series she directed, starring Joy Sunday (Wednesday) and Salina Estitties (RuPaul’s Drag Race), is available to stream on Revry.
