Jasmine Kaur Roy and Avinash Roy’s Room at the Farm (Khooh Waala Ghar) oozes an old-world charm. About the impact of rampant industrialisation and unsustainable modernisation on the precarious state of Indian farming, it gives a human face to the pressing reality.

Newly-wed Nihal must pay off mounting debts even as the farmlands around him make way for factories. His young wife Reet craves his company, but he ends up spending time in the little room at the farm, prioritising his crop over Reet. Will it drive a wedge in their blooming relationship?

This heartwarming film places hope in the power of love to tide over the strains of life. Vrinda Malhotra’s bright-eyed, vivacious Reet offers a lovely foil to the tired demeanour of Gu’u Bamrah’s Nihal. Far from a romanticised gaze at rural Punjab, Room at the Farm captures its wintry desolation and sombre spirit with authenticity and eloquence.
