In Shape of Momo, Bishnu returns to her ancestral home in a remote Himalayan village after quitting her job in Delhi. Back within the rhythms of a multi-generational household, she negotiates expectations that have long defined the women around her. She is welcomed by her grandmother, awaiting her son’s return from Dubai; her mother, eager for Bishnu to settle into matrimony; and her elder sister, pregnant and navigating the uncertainties of her own marriage. As Bishnu dreams of opening a homestay and carving out a life of independence, she struggles to reconcile her modern aspirations with the traditions that shape her family and community.
Director Tribeny Rai pulls us into an intricate weave of traditions, family, resistance, love, and obligation. With a patient and tender gaze, Rai observes the intimate negotiations of womanhood, honouring the ways women hold together the fragile worlds we call home.
